Exploring the safety of nanoparticles in Australian sunscreens
نویسنده
چکیده
Engineered nanoparticles are now well recognised to possess a range of apparently unique and as yet under-researched toxicities Safety concerns about such nanoparticles in cosmetics such as sunscreens are fuelled by consideration of factors such as their size, high mobility in the body and unusual reactivities. Yet, published research relied upon by safety regulators suggests there are no significant adverse health effects from nanoparticle sunscreen preparations [such as those containing nanoparticulate zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2)] despite free radical formation in the presence of light. This is chiefly because of minimal dermal absorption of skinapplied nanoparticles below the dead and highly keratinised cells of the stratum corneum. Influential non-governmental organisations and a NSW parliamentary inquiry have expressed concern that this research has inadequately accounted for issues associated with chronic use of these sunscreens over hairy, damaged or aged skin or flexural creases. It may be time for Australian safety regulators to apply the precautionary principle in this context and increase labelling requirements about the use of nanoparticles in sunscreens.

TiO2 Nanoparticles as a Common Component of Sunscreens: An Experimental Study of Dermal/Ocular Safety Assessment
Background: The safety evaluations of sunscreens containing Titanium Dioxide-Nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) were done by dermal exposure, acute dermal and eye irritation/corrosion, and skin sensitization according to the guideline for Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was the evaluation of safety and toxicity of TiO2-NPs following acute su...
متن کاملNaturally occurring nanoparticles from English ivy: an alternative to metal-based nanoparticles for UV protection
BACKGROUND Over the last decade safety concerns have arisen about the use of metal-based nanoparticles in the cosmetics field. Metal-based nanoparticles have been linked to both environmental and animal toxicity in a variety of studies. Perhaps the greatest concern involves the large amounts of TiO2 nanoparticles that are used in commercial sunscreens. As an alternative to using these potential...
متن کاملMeasurement of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles in Sunscreen using Single Particle ICP-MS
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are commonly used in sunscreens as part of the formulation to block the sun’s harmful UV rays. As the use of nanoparticles in consumer products has increased, concern has risen as to the health and environmental effects of nanoparticles. Since sunscreens contact skin and wash off in water, the TiO2 nanoparticles can find their way into biological and enviro...
متن کاملA review of the scientific literature on the safety of nanoparticulate titanium dioxide or zinc oxide in sunscreens
There is evidence from isolated (in vitro) cell experiments that ZnO and TiO2 may induce free radical formation in the presence of light and this free-radical generation may cause cell damage (photo-genotoxicity with ZnO). However, recent work suggests that the photogenotoxicity seen in these studies (with ZnO) may be due to an UV-induced experimental artifact in an in vitro assay, rather than ...

Background and Aim: Sunscreens are an important part of photoprotection strategy. They are exposed to strict safety evaluation using human subjects such as in vivo studies of skin irritation. Biophysical parameters measurements could be used as fast and noninvasive methods to measure any destructive effect of cosmetic formulations on skin application sites. Methods: Five sunscreens were sel...
